The typical lifespan of a dog sometimes depend on breed’s, why the average lifespan is 10 to 13 years. Obviously, dog doesn’t have much time to live. But how will you feel if you realize that you are depreciating your dog’s life with what you’re feeding it.
Generally, dog will always want to take anything that goes into their owners mouth, why some people cannot resist the look in their dogs eye, they give it anything they eat. However, you can get your dog into trouble giving it what it shouldn’t eat. Not all foods that are good for you is good for your dog.
I’m not just going to tell you the type of food you shouldn’t give your dog, but further explain the toxic substance present in each food, and how it can affect your dog’s life.

Many people know the effect of chocolate on dogs, but some ignore, thinking small quantity of chocolate will not really affect their dog. No matter how small the quantity might be, the negative effect it will have on your dog will make a difference on its life.
Cocoa is the main product of chocolate, and it contain a toxin called theobromine which is a bitter alkaloid of cocoa plant. It is present in all chocolates and much more in a dark chocolate, it can cause an upset of stomach, vomiting , diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, internal bleeding, heart attack, muscle tremors and death.
It’s preferable to avoid giving your dog any form of chocolate no matter how little, enjoy your chocolate yourself and save your dog from sudden death.
- Feeding your dog with salty foods
Avoid giving your dog any food that contain high volume of salt. You can take a lot of things that won’t really affect you but it’s not the same with your dog.
Too much salt for dog can cause excessive thirst or urination, and it may lead to sodium ion positioning. Sings of eating too much salt include dehydration, vomiting, high body temperature and diarrhea. It is advisable to reduce the level of salt you share with your pet.
- Fatty meat
Any form of fat either cooked or raw is bad for your dog’s health, it can cause pancreatitis ( inflammation in the pancreas), which is caused by high level of fat in the blood.
Giving your dog fat can cause upset of stomach and sometimes lead to indigestion. It’s good to feed your dog with cooked meat, but avoid giving it fat that will shortening its life.
- Sweet corn
It’s obvious that corn is part of the common ingredient in dog’s feed, and many people find it easy to use it as treat for their dogs. It can sometimes be dangerous for their health. The corb are very hard, in turn they find it difficult to digest, and can cause internal blockage.
- Onions and garlic
Onions are known to add extra taste to our foods why garlic is also use for some medical reasons. This is not the same with dogs, onions contain an ingredient called thiosulphate that is very harmful to dogs

The ingestion of onions causes hemolytic anaemia which usually damage the red blood cell. Why other sings include pale gums, weakness, vomiting and loss of appetite.
- Sugary foods
As taking too much of sugar will affect you, it’s also applicable to your dog. Giving your dog sugary foods or junks will only damage its health. The effect of sugary foods on dogs are diabetes, obesity, depression and weight loss.
- Avocado fruit
Avocado fruits has a lot of nutrients, vitamins that is good for human consumption. Which is not the same for dogs; if you are a fruit type or you plant avocado in you house, protect you dog from eating any part of it, the leaves, fruit, seed and barks. Contain a toxic substance called percine that could affect your dog.
Avocado can cause stomach upset, obstruction, vomiting and diarrhea for your dog.
- Raw meat, egg and fish
Meat, egg and fish are good source of protein for dogs, but feeding it raw can be dangerous for their health.
Raw meat, egg and fish may contain bacteria like E Coli or salmonella which can cause skin problem. It is advisable to cook any fish, egg or meat you want to give your dog.
